Sarvajanik U-Learn: A Step towards Flexible and Quality Learning

The National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 aims to create a flexible, accessible, and technology-driven education system in India. NEP 2020 has put significant emphasis on MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) by allowing students to opt for up to 40% of the courses from their curriculum through the platform like SWAYAM.

SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is the indigenous platform of the MHRD, Govt. of India providing an integrated portal for hosting online MOOC courses.

SWAYAM is a web-based learning platform that offers a range of MOOCs courses with the goal of encouraging widespread online access and interactive engagement. The SWAYAM MOOCs are online courses following the four quadrants and consisting of video, text, self-assessment and much more.

SWAYAM offers MOOCs  by means of 10 National Course Coordinators
  • AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) for self-paced and international courses
  • NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) for Engineering
  • UGC (University Grants Commission) for non technical post-graduation education
  • CEC (Consortium for Educational Communication) for under-graduate education
  • NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) for school education
  • NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) for school education
  • IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) for out-of-school students
  • IIMB (Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore) for management studies
  • NITTTR (National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research) for Teacher Training programme
  • INI (Institutes of National Importance) for Non-Technical Courses

As per the UGC Framework for Universities to conduct Examination for SWAYAM Courses notified on 27th August 2024 available at (https://swayam.gov.in/about_university), SWAYAM MOOCs examination can be conducted either by Universities or by National Course Coordinators (as listed above).

SWAYAM MOOCs at Sarvajanik University (SU)

In line with the objectives of NEP-2020 and the UGC Framework, Sarvajanik U-Learn is a dedicated web-page hosted by SU to support and promote the adoption of SWAYAM MOOCs across its affiliated institutes. With Sarvajanik U-Learn, students (UG, PG and PhD level) can explore varieties of high-quality online courses developed by national coordinators such as IITs, IIMs, and other reputed institutions.

SU has made amendments in its Ordinances, Rules and Regulations through its Statutory bodies (Academic Council, Governing body) to incorporate provisions for the transfer of up to 40% of the total courses in the curriculum to be taken through online learning via the SWAYAM Platform.

As per the Academic Council Resolution: AC16_22 at the 16th Academic  council meeting of the Sarvajanik University held on 19th December 2024, SU has formed the regulations for the implementations of MOOCs through SWAYAM.

  • Students will get benefit of contents discussed by IIT/NIT/IIM/IISC professors
  • No need to pay course examination fees at NPTEL
  • Exam of MOOC course does not clash with University Examination
  • Ease of reappearing in the examination in case of failure
